project mc2

project mc2 was a line of dolls made by mga entertainment (are you noticing a pattern here?) from 2015 to 2019. they stand either 10.75 or 11.25 inches tall, depending whether your doll has flat or heeled feet. the line was STEM-focused (although it added an extra letter to include art, thus making the acronym STEAM) with a premise of high school girls who were also secret agents, using their areas of expertise to solve problems. there was an accompanying netflix show that got... 5 or 6 seasons? i think? i don't feel like looking right now. also since i'm typing this out in the neocities html editor i have to use the superscript tag every time i want to type the name which is a kind of annoying lol

i have six project mc2 dolls: mckeyla, adrienne, bryden, camryn, devon, and ember.

pic coming soon

these six characters made up the line. the first two (?) waves featured only the first four girls listed above, while devon and ember were introduced later. my mckeyla, adrienne, and camryn are all from wave 1, while bryden, devon, and ember are wave 3. each of them came with a little "experiment", which was sometimes more of a craft or activity than an experiment, but they were all decently functional and i could see kids having fun with them. there were also budget dolls with less articulation and simpler outfits available. interestingly, these dolls had not only removable hands as do many modern fashion dolls with wrist articulation, but they also detached at the knees and elbows. the knees i can understand because they had large feet, so pants made of a non-stretchy material like wave 3 devon's would otherwise be really hard to put on and take off, but the elbows seem a little like overkill. adding to my confusion, my mckeyla's right elbow joint has never wanted to stay in place, so to this day she has a small piece of fabric wrapped around the peg to keep her arm in one piece. i don't get why mga included that option seeing as it kind of made the dolls worse but whatever

project mc2 dolls can wear barbie clothes, for the most part. they're loose, especially skirts or pants without an elasticized waist, but they'll fit. rainbow high tops and shoes also fit well, and they're almost exactly the same size as the disney descendants dolls produced when hasbro had the license.

i really, really like a lot of things about these dolls, but there's also quite a bit that could've been better. for one thing, the fashion doll scene as a whole was struggling during the latter half of the 2010s. mattel had lost the disney license to hasbro, which was a major blow to them and probably the biggest reason behind them discontinuing ever after high and later monster high. barbie was doing, like, okay, but mga in particular was unequivocally in their flop era. bratz hadn't been seen on shelves since a poorly received reboot in 2013, and being released in 2015 meant project mc2 predated LOL surprise, which seems to be their current biggest cash cow. unfortunately, you can kind of tell- the dolls' bodies, in particular their limbs, feel more cheaply made than any other mga doll i've gotten my hands on. i already mentioned the dubious articulation, and the hair quality was all right as long as your doll's hair was straight, but the wavy/curly hair was about what i'd come to expect from mga at the time, which means it was bad. the clothes were also very hit-or-miss in my opinion. according to some rumors, this line entered development as far back as 2012, and you can absolutely tell looking at the first wave outfits. (PERSONALLY though i think adrienne never had a bad outfit) despite the quality control issues and the tragedeigh-esque names, though, they still hold a special place in my heart. i really like their faces, the show was fun, even if it was cheesy; and i met some good friends of mine through talking about these dolls! i'd love to see them come back someday, but that probably won't happen, so this page is my own little tribute to them.
